Advancing Equity and Strengthening Teaching through Elementary Mathematical Modeling

Making Ghosts

Making tasks require lots of important mathematics! It’s easy to turn any making task into a math modeling task that students can get into! There are important variables to consider in any making task and there are so many entry points for students to be successful! How might you take a making task that is already in your curriculum and turn it into an engaging modeling task? Check out a 4th grade crafty lesson on making ghosts.

Planning a field trip?

As we celebrate a new school year, invite students to co-plan your upcoming field trip! There are so many wonderful modeling opportunities when planning a field trip. For example, how many buses will you need to order? Well, that depends on so many important variables! How many students will be going? Will there be chaperones? How many per class? How many teachers are there? What is the capacity of each school bus?

Consider these important variable to plan your next field trip!

Some other related mathematics exploration include:
· What is our budget?
· Will weather effect our trip/ travel time?
· What are we going to do when we get there?
· How long would it take to get there?
· How long are we staying there?
· When do we have to wake up?
· How much will gas cost?
· What will we want to explore?
· What time will we leave the school?
· How many students are going?
· What kind of bus are we taking?
· How many hours will we spend at the location?
· What will we eat?
· How big is the place?
· How many people can fit on the bus?
